Frequently Asked Questions
Where do your charters depart from?
Apex Recon Sportfishing Charters operates in the Whitehall and Montague area of West Michigan. 8500 Ramp rd Montague MI, 49437 is the address that we will likely meet at if fishing White Lake. If we're fishing from somewhere else exact meeting location, departure time, and parking instructions will be provided before your trip.
How many people can come?
We accommodate up to four guests per charter. Smaller groups of two or three anglers often enjoy more time handling rods and fighting fish, but groups of four are always welcome.
Do I need a Michigan fishing license?
Yes. Each guest who is required by Michigan law to have a fishing license must purchase one before the trip. Licenses can be purchased online through the Michigan DNR or from participating retailers.
What species of fish do you target?
Depending on the season and selected trip, we may target king salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, lake trout, yellow perch, bluegill, crappie, sunfish, and other members of Michigan’s panfish family. Fishing conditions and available species change throughout the year.
Is fishing equipment provided?
Yes. We provide the rods, reels, tackle, bait, and essential fishing equipment needed for your charter. You are welcome to bring personal equipment, but please discuss it with the captain beforehand.
What should I bring?
Please bring weather-appropriate clothing, soft-soled shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, food and drinks, and a cooler to transport your catch home. Dressing in layers is recommended because conditions on the water can be cooler than they are on shore.
Can children and beginners come?
Absolutely. Families, children, and first-time anglers are welcome. Captain Ryan will explain the equipment, help guests learn the techniques, and provide assistance throughout the trip. Please tell us the ages of any children when booking so we can prepare appropriately.
Are life jackets and safety equipment provided?
Yes. Apex Recon carries the required safety equipment and appropriate personal flotation devices. Safety is always the captain’s first priority.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The captain monitors the weather, wind, and lake conditions closely. If conditions are unsafe, the captain may delay, reschedule, shorten, or cancel the trip. The final decision about operating the boat belongs to the captain and will always be based on safety.
What if I get seasick?
Consider taking motion-sickness medication before departure according to the product directions or your healthcare provider’s advice. Eating a light meal, staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol the night before, and watching the horizon can also help.
Are fish guaranteed?
No captain can guarantee how many fish will be caught. Weather, water conditions, fish movement, and other natural factors affect every trip. We will use proven equipment, current information, and our best effort to provide a productive and enjoyable experience.
Will you clean our fish?
Ask the captain about fish-cleaning arrangements when booking. Guests should bring a cooler and ice so their catch can be transported home safely.
Can we bring food and drinks?
Yes. Guests may bring food, water, and other beverages in a small cooler. Please avoid glass containers. Ask the captain before bringing alcohol, and remember that excessive drinking or unsafe behavior will not be permitted.
Is smoking allowed?
Please ask the captain about the current smoking and vaping policy before your trip.
What time should we arrive?
Plan to arrive approximately 15 minutes before your scheduled departure unless the captain provides different instructions. Arriving late may reduce your fishing time because other trips may be scheduled afterward.
What is your cancellation policy?
Deposits, cancellations, refunds, and rescheduling are handled according to the cancellation policy provided during booking. Weather cancellations made by the captain are treated differently from customer cancellations.
Should we tip the captain or first mate?
Tips are never required, but they are greatly appreciated when you receive excellent service. A gratuity of approximately 15–20% is customary in the charter-fishing industry and recognizes the work involved in preparing equipment, assisting guests, and cleaning up after the trip.
